Today, I am honored to stand here and share with you something special about a traditional Chinese festival — the Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival celebrations. In 2020, this beautiful festival took place on February 8th.
The Lantern Festival has a long history, dating back over 2,000 years. It is a time when families gather together, enjoy delicious food, and light up the night with colorful lanterns. One of the most famous foods during this festival is "Yuanxiao" — small, round dumplings filled with sweet or savory ingredients. Eating Yuanxiao symbolizes family reunion and happiness.
In addition to the food, the festival is also known for its beautiful lantern displays. People create all kinds of lanterns in different shapes and sizes, from animals to flowers, and even famous characters from Chinese stories. These lights illuminate the streets and bring joy to everyone who sees them.
Another important tradition is the riddle guessing game. People write riddles on paper and hang them on the lanterns. As people try to solve these riddles, it becomes a fun and exciting activity that brings people together.
As we celebrate the Lantern Festival, we are reminded of the importance of family, community, and cultural heritage.
